The University of Rochester\'s Center for Study Abroad and Interdepartmental Programs announces that 10 students have been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for spring 2009. Scholarship recipients are chosen through a competitive process and use the award to offset the cost of study abroad.
The recipients of this semester\'s awards are sophomore Natalie Scott, juniors Laura Dobryznski, Jessica Gambacurta, Damian LaRue, Shirley Liang, Libby Miga, Stephen Supoyo, Ashley Tamilio-Awed, Rachel Twardowski, and Victoria Yam. Students will study countries including India, Egypt, Ghana, and Germany, among others.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, the scholarship enables students with limited financial means the opportunity to enroll in study abroad programs worldwide. The program provides undergraduates with awards of up to $5,000 each.
Since the program\'s inception in 2002, 27 University students have won Gilman awards. For its increased success rate, the University\'s program was included in the summer edition of the Gilman Advisor Newsletter and Jacqueline Levine, director of the Center for Study Abroad, was featured in the Advisor Spotlight for her efforts.
