A nationally renowned American Sign Language (ASL) storyteller will present a program on Friday, April 4, at the University of Rochester.

"The Best of the Old West: An Evening of ASL Storytelling with Sam Supalla " starts at 7 p.m. in Hubbell Auditorium in Hutchison Hall on the River Campus. Samuel J. Supalla is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and School Psychology at the University of Arizona. His series of poetic-like tales, which begins with one titled "The Best Whiskey in the West," is geared to an audience of all ages.

Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students with ID card, and the event will be voice interpreted.

Supalla's research focuses on the linguistic needs of deaf children, including literacy issues involved when deaf children learn to read and write in English without the support of sound. Supalla has developed a system of symbols to spell out American Sign Language to teach deaf children the concept of an alphabet. He also helped found the Laurent Clerc Elementary School in Tucson, a charter school for both deaf and hearing children.

"The Best of the Old West: An Evening of ASL Storytelling with Sam Supalla" is sponsored by the ASL Club and the American Sign Language Program of the University of Rochester. For more information, call (585) 273-5165.
