DATE, TIME, AND PLACE: Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 5 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson room on the first floor of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
WHAT: Copyright law and publishing expert Stanford Thatcher launches this academic year's Neilly Lecture series with a talk on the promises and pitfalls of free online access to scholarly books. The talk celebrates the 20th anniversary of the University of Rochester Press, a scholarly press that specializes in the humanities and social sciences.
Sanford G. Thatcher, former director of Penn State University Press, has served on many boards, including the Association of American University Presses, the Association of American Publishers, and the Association for Copyright Enforcement, overseeing a landmark suit against Texaco. He has written extensively on copyright issues and the publishing industry and drafted the AAUP's 2007 Statement on Open Access.
