EVENT: Students Praised for Civic Engagement during City Hall Ceremony

WHO: Area college students who participated in two civic engagement programs, the Rochester Urban Fellowship and Rochester Youth Year, will be honored for their commitment to the City of Rochester during a ceremony at City Hall. Students will hear remarks from Mayor Robert J. Duffy, as well as give presentations about their work throughout the two experiences. Both programs are hosted by the Rochester Center for Community Leadership at the University of Rochester.

TIME, DATE, PLACE: 5 p.m. on Monday, July 26, at Council Chambers, City Hall (30 Church Street).

ABOUT THE ROCHESTER URBAN FELLOWSHIP: The Rochester Urban Fellowship is an urban-immersion, civic engagement program for college students. Participants may attend a Rochester-area college, or may be Rochester residents attending college elsewhere. Urban Fellows spend ten weeks during the summer working at various community-based organizations, and convene one day a week for seminar-style discussions of urban issues. More than 100 students have completed the program since its inception, including 22 in 2010. The program receives support from the Rochester Community Foundation and the J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation.

ABOUT ROCHESTER YOUTH YEAR: The Rochester Youth Year Fellowship is an AmeriCorps*VISTA program designed to afford recent graduates from Rochester-area colleges the opportunity to remain in Rochester and work with selected youth-serving agencies, in order to alleviate poverty and improve opportunities for youth and their families. Nine Rochester Youth Year Fellows will complete their year of VISTA service in August. Rochester Youth Year is coordinated collaboratively by the following area colleges: Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, SUNY Geneseo, The College at Brockport, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher College, and the University of Rochester.
