Festival Brings New Workshops, Music to Alliance Building
WHAT: University of Rochester students present the 4th annual ArtAwake, the festival that transforms an unused building in Rochester into a vibrant music and art venue. ArtAwake seeks to unite members of the community through a shared celebration of Rochester\'s art and music culture.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, at the Alliance Building, 183 E. Main Street, Rochester.
ABOUT ARTAWAKE 2011: The festival will feature performances by 22 area musicians and will display more than 150 works of art. New this year, ArtAwake is teaming up with the Memorial Art Gallery to host a family-friendly craft workshop in the afternoon. Other interactive exhibits include on-site t-shirt printing and the Rochester Contemporary Art Center will have tiles available so guests can contribute to their 6x6x2011 exhibition fundraiser.
Complementary hors d\'oeuvres will showcase local ingredients, compliments of Lento Restaurant and Meliora Catering. Imagine Moore Winery will host a free wine tasting, while desserts from Eco Bella Bakery will be featured at a cupcake station.
The concept for ArtAwake originated in 2008 when University of Rochester student Carlin Gettlife \'09 saw that many students, absorbed in school work and campus activities, were missing out on all the city had to offer. His solution: ArtAwake, an art and music festival that would present an opportunity for interaction with the Rochester community. More than 5,000 Rochesterians attended the festival in the last three years, which won the Student-Driven Program of the Year award in 2008 from the Association of College Unions International.
TICKETS: Tickets are $7 advance, $9 door for University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music students; $8 advance, $10 door for members of the University of Rochester community and other area college students; $9 advance, $11 door for the general public. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the Common Market in Wilson Commons on the River Campus or at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue.
