EVENT: Gandhi Institute Celebrates New Plymouth Ave. Location
WHO: The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at the University of Rochester will officially open the doors to its new offices in the Plymouth-Exchange (PLEX) neighborhood.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the M.K. Gandhi Institute, located at 929 S. Plymouth Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
WHAT: After 18 months of extensive renovations to the exterior and interior of a 1890s era house in the Plymouth-Exchange neighborhood, the M.K. Gandhi Institute celebrates the opening of its new home. The new space includes a conference room, kitchen, offices, and rooms for small group interactions. Adjacent to the house is a three-quarter acre lot, which the Institute will use as a community garden site and outdoor meeting space.
The house, which was vacant for more than 17 years, was renovated by its owners, David Skinner '79, and David Knoll. Costs for the Institute's move have been offset through fundraising. Rochester design firm Merkel Donahue is just one of the many local companies that offered pro bono support for the project.
The celebration will feature performances by the award-winning RIT Bhangra dance group and remarks by local leaders. There will be arts and crafts, outdoor activities, tours of the new facility, and refreshments.
