Rao Named Fellow of American Statistical Association

S.R.S. Rao Poduri, professor of statistics at the University of Rochester, was named a fellow of the American Statistical Association at the group's annual convention in Chicago August 6.

Rao was one of 60 members elected by their peers as fellows, an honor signifying outstanding professional contributions and leadership in the field of statistics. The ASA cited Rao for his work in statistics research, teaching and consultation with industry and government agencies. With a membership of nearly 20,000, the ASA is the world's largest professional organization for statisticians.

Rao, who received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, joined the University in 1964. He has twice won the Superior Teaching Award at the University's William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration.

Rao specializes in theoretical and applied statistics, sampling methodologies, linear models, variance components and multivariate statistical methods. He has served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Census Bureau, Eastman Kodak, Rochester Telephone and Strong Memorial Hospital.

Rao edited W.G. Cochran's Impact on Statistics (1985), and is preparing two other books for publication: Variance and Covariance Components: Mixed Models, Methodologies and Applications and Sampling Methodologies. He is an associate editor of Communications in Statistics and a reviewer for six other journals. sb
