Phillips Named Vice President for Investments

Douglas W. Phillips, treasurer of Williams College, has been named the University of Rochester's vice president for investments. He will oversee the investment program for an endowment totaling $1.2 billion as of June 30, 2000.

Edmund Hajim, trustee and chair of the Board of Trustees' Investment Committee, said that Phillips "fits the job at Rochester perfectly."

After four years as manager of investment administration at Princeton University, Phillips joined Williams in 1986 as assistant comptroller, becoming associate treasurer in 1994 and treasurer in 1998. At Williams he has worked closely with the college's Board of Trustees Finance Committee and during his career there has helped to take the endowment and similar funds to approximately $1.5 billion today. (The Williams endowment totaled $200 million in 1986. In ensuing years, the endowment performance record has been one of the best among institutions in higher education.)

Phillips, who starts at Rochester in October, holds a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University and an M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Phillips succeeds Richard W. Greene, who is retiring after 14 years with the University and whose career also included posts as treasurer and CFO of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and vice president and treasurer at Wesleyan University.
