Philosophy Department Awards Essay Prize to William and Mary Prof
The University of Rochester Department of Philosophy has awarded the Colin and Ailsa Turbayne International Berkeley Essay Prize to Stephen Harris of the College of William and Mary.
Essays submitted for the prize contest, now in its fifth year, discuss aspects of the teachings of Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley. Berkeley, who lived from 1685 to 1753, was an empiricist and idealist in the tradition of John Locke and David Hume.
Harris won with an essay titled "Berkeley's Argument from Perceptual Relativity." He is a professor at William and Mary. The prize carries a $2,000 cash award.
Colin Turbayne is a professor emeritus of the philosophy department, which he joined in 1957. When he established the prize in 1988, Turbayne said, "I wanted to advance Berkeley scholarship throughout the world, and I wanted to help the University's philosophy department, where I spent 23 years."
