EVENT: "'Enjoy Yourself!': Gender and Identity Politics in Contemporary Czech Art," a lecture by Martina Pachmanova, art historian and curator

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public

Martina Pachmanova, assistant professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Czech Republic, will give a lecture at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus.

Pachmanova's talk, titled "'Enjoy Yourself!': Gender and Identity Politics in Contemporary Czech Art," will draw attention to issues of gender, race, and class and how they are used by modern Czech artists. She will also speak on the relationship that politics and art play in the public's eye and whether ethics are possible in the visual culture of today's world.

An art historian and writer, Pachmanova has been the curator for more than 20 exhibitions, including Real (E)states, the 2000 annual show of the Soros Center for Contemporary Arts in Slovakia. A candidate for her doctorate in the Department of Art History at Charles University in Prague, Pachmanova's dissertation is titled Inside/Out: Gender Politics in Czech Modernism. She is currently studying at Harvard University on a Fulbright Fellowship.

"Enjoy Yourself!" is sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies. Pachmanova's talk is also part of the Skalny Lecture and Artist Series, a program presented by the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, and is co-sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College and by the Department of Art and Art History.
