EVENT: "Bill Clinton and the Ethics of Speechwriting," a talk by presidential rhetoric scholar Martin J. Medhurst

Martin J. Medhurst, one of America's leading presidential rhetoric scholars, will speak about "Bill Clinton and the Ethics of Speechwriting" at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester River Campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

Medhurst is professor of speech communication and coordinator of the renowned Presidential Rhetoric program at the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. His speech inaugurates a unique relationship announced recently between the University of Rochester and the Texas A&M Center for Presidential Studies.

Under this arrangement, both schools will exchange speakers, hold joint conference series, working papers, and symposia, and make research accessible to each other's students and faculty, including the University's extensive papers of former New York Governor and Presidential nominee Thomas E. Dewey.

Medhurst has written or edited eight books, including Beyond the Rhetorical Presidency, Cold War Rhetoric, and Eisenhower's War of Words: Rhetoric and Leadership. He is the founding editor of the journal Rhetoric and Public Affairs, and is the general editor of the 10-volume series, A Rhetorical History of the United States. Medhurst will be available for questions following his speech.
