WHAT: Exploiting the opportunities of "big data" is one of the current challenges in computing. The second Big Data Forum will bring together leading experts in big data analytics and its applications to address how best to deal with these exciting challenges, across a range of fields – from astronomy and particle physics to customer services and neuroscience. Invited speakers include several from the University and also representatives from Microsoft Research, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Xerox Research Center in Webster.
TIME, DATE AND PLACE: All day, starting at 8:30am, Friday, Oct. 18, in Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester River Campus.
BACKGROUND: The forum is organized by the Rochester Big Data Initiative, a center at the University of Rochester formed to promote interdisciplinary research in this field. Topics will include machine learning, network science, cognitive science, and applications in the health, social, and physical sciences.
The after-dinner talk will be given by M. Ehsan Hoque, assistant professor in computer science, on affective computing and a computer system he designed to help people practice social interactions. This work won a best paper award at a recent conference.
