EVENT: "Elmer Adler and the Pynson Printers," an exhibit of books from the Rochester native, printer and book collector

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: Now through June 30 in the Great Hall (second floor) of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus during regular library hours (8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 1 a.m. Sunday.

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public Note: Parking is available on University lots after 7 p.m. weeknights and on weekends.

"Elmer Adler and the Pynson Printers" is the current display in the Great Hall (second floor) of Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus. A Rochester native, Elmer Adler was devoted to books as a collector, as a printer of beautifully designed volumes, and as a principal in the influential journal The Colophon, which he established in 1930.

The exhibition includes books and articles that document Adler's early years in Rochester and his many contributions to the world of books and bibliography. Also displayed are examples of the handsome volumes produced by the Pynson Printers, the press that Adler founded in 1922.

Included is the first book of the press, April Twilights (1922) by Willa Cather, Beowulf (1932) with its powerful illustrations by Rockwell Kent, and two of the highly prized books on papermaking by Dard Hunter. Copies of The Colophon also are featured. Each issue of this remarkable, but short-lived, journal was designed, illustrated and printed by the leading book designers, illustrators, and printers of the period. The exhibition continues through June 2000 during the Library's regular hours.
