EVENT: University of Rochester Dance Program master class and demonstration

The Dance Program of the University of Rochester is sponsoring a master class and lecture and demonstration featuring the work of New York City choreographer Mark Jarecke.

Jarecke will be joined by dancer Steffany George and photographer Sean Brown in presenting a performance/installation piece titled "SubDermal." The commissioned work explores identity from the inside out by incorporating a video of abstracted surgery images with dance. Jarecke also will discuss the artistic process and the philosophy behind the creation of "SubDermal" beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in the dance studio of Spurrier Hall on the River Campus.

Earlier in the day, Jarecke and George will present a master class titled "Inhabitable Space." The class will introduce participants to Rudolf Laban's space harmony theories through the use of structure improvisation and movement in three-dimensional space. The class will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the dance studio of Spurrier Hall.

After receiving a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Nebraska, where he studied philosophy and dance, Jarecke studied at the Merce Cunningham Studio. He has performed in the Inside/Out Festival at Jacob's Pillow and the American Dance Festival's Emerging Generation concert. George, who performed in Germany after earning a degree in performance and choreography from Virginia Commonwealth University, currently teaches movement for actors at the Stella Adler Conservatory. Brown, who has exhibited his photography, sculptures, video work, and installations in various venues on the East Coast, received his master's degree from Bennington College and works on a non-profit Web site of socially conscious programming and develops artist Web sites for Sony Music.
