The College Convocation celebrating the start of the academic year is scheduled for noon on Friday, Sept. 20, on Dandelion Square.

An opportunity for all College undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff to reconnect after the summer break, Convocation will include welcoming remarks, presentation of the Goergen Awards for Contributions to Undergraduate Education in the College, and a picnic.

The Goergen Awards are named for and sponsored by Board of Trustees Chairman Robert B. Goergen and his wife, Pamela.

The recipients of the Goergen Award for Distinguished Achievement and Artistry in Undergraduate Teaching are: Douglas Brooks, professor of religion; Patrick Davies, associate professor psychology; Diane Dalecki, assistant professor of biomedical engineering; and Thomas Eickbush, professor of biology.

The Department of English and the College Workshop Courses sponsored by Learning Assistance Services are receiving the Goergen Award for Curricular Achievement in Undergraduate Education.

The Goergen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Learning is being presented to George VanderZwaag, director of athletics and recreation; and Sam Nelson, assistant professor of English, director of forensics, and head coach for the University Debate Union.

The ceremonies will be followed by a picnic on the Wilson Commons lawn for all students, faculty, and staff of the College. In case of rain, Convocation ceremonies will take place in Strong Auditorium and the College picnic will be held in Douglass Dining Center.
