Joanne Bernardi, associate professor of Japanese, will give a lecture titled "The Obasute Legend and two Ballads of Narayama." The "Obasute" tale, about the practice of "disposing the elderly," dates back to the 14th-century. The lecture will look at popular variations of this legend and how they affect the depiction of rural poverty in medieval Japan.
