The Black Students' Union (BSU) of the University of Rochester will mark Kwanzaa with a variety of events on the River Campus celebrating culture, family, and community through seven principles.
The events include:
- A BSU Volleyball Night at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in the Goergen Athletic Center. Students are encouraged to join the BSU in a series of volleyball games as they celebrate the values of Umoja (unity) and Kujichagulia (self-determination).
- The creation of holiday cards for patients at the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the Hirst Lounge in Wilson Commons. The event will highlight the principle of Ujima (collective work and responsibility).
- A discussion, "Alternatives to the Mainstream," by local black business owners spotlighting the values of Ujamaa (cooperative economics) and Nia (purpose) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, in the Havens Lounge in Wilson Commons.
- BSU Open Mic Night at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in Hillside Café in the main level of the Susan B. Anthony Halls. The event provides an outlet in which students can express creativity by performing their talents as they honor the principles of Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith).
- "Kwanzaa Extravaganza: Remembering Our Past, Repairing Our Present, Reclaiming Our Future," at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, in the May Room in Wilson Commons. The finale, which will recognize all seven principles, will include food, performances, and a guest speaker. Tickets available only in advance, $14 at the Common Market.
