200 Students from Five Area Colleges Assist Voters at the Polls

WHO: Undergraduates at the University of Rochester, Monroe Community College, Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, and St. John Fisher College will participate directly in the electoral process by working as college poll inspectors at various polling sites throughout Monroe County.

DATE, PLACE: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at select polling sites throughout Monroe County, including Penfield, Henrietta, Brighton, and the City of Rochester.

WHAT: The Election Fellows program is a partnership among the University, Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, and St. John Fisher College, and the Monroe County Board of Elections. Through the program, 200 students were trained to work at Monroe County's polling sites, where they will assist voters as they cast their ballots in the November 8th election. Now in its second year, the program is funded through a grant from the federal Election Assistance Commission through the "Help America Vote Act."

In addition to the 200 undergraduates who will work at the polls, ten students were selected as Election Fellows. In this leadership role, Election Fellows participated in advanced training on how to use the voting machines, recruitment and communications techniques, and on the bi-partisan election process.

SUGGESTED POLLING SITES: Students will be working at the following polling sites: * Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park * South Avenue Rec Center (Behind School 12), 999 South Avenue * John Knox Presbyterian Church, 3233 West Ridge Road * St. John Fisher College Skalny Center Gallery, 3690 East Avenue * Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue * Penfield Town Hall, 3100 Atlantic Avenue * Henrietta Town Hall, 475 Calkins Road
