WHAT: Louis I. Nagy, executive secretary of the Hungarian-American Club of Rochester, will give a talk on "General Józef Zachariasz Bem (1794-1850): Son of Poland, Hero of Hungary." The lecture will review Bem's life, with emphasis on his action-filled year in Hungary and his inspirational role as a champion of liberty.
The Polish general, famous for his role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 against Russia, enjoys an enduring legacy: the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 began with a protest at the foot of a statue of Bem in Budapest.
The lecture is part of the Skalny Center Four-thirty Tea series. Attendees will enjoy tea in a cafe-like setting, with an opportunity to chat with each other and listen to the informal talk. The ongoing series focuses on topics related to Central Europe.
