October 27, 2014

Re: Richard P. Miller Jr.
Date: Oct. 26, 2014

It is with the deepest sorrow that the University of Rochester community learned of the death of Richard P. Miller Jr., a former distinguished senior executive at the University, first as vice president for external affairs and senior counsel to the president and then senior vice president and chief operating officer. Dick was a visible and important face of the University to many external constituencies, large and small, and was seen as an advocate on their behalf.

Following his tenure at Rochester, Dick served as vice chancellor and chief operating officer for the SUNY system and then was the ninth president of Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, from 2003 to 2008. More recently, Dick entered politics, winning election and reelection as Mayor of Oneonta.

Dick Miller leaves an indelible mark on the Rochester community and beyond. The worlds of academic administration, business, and politics, and the lives of the beneficiaries of his generous attention and tireless efforts, grieve at this loss. He will be sorely missed. On behalf of the University of Rochester, let me express our profound condolences to his wife, Andi, their children, and his extended family.

The University flag will be lowered on Wednesday, Oct. 29, in his memory.
