A new mural is taking shape in the tunnel system under Dewey Hall, thanks in part to a new initiative to bring more public art to the University’s River Campus.

On Wednesday, March 25, Sarah Rutherford, a Rochester-based artist, will begin working on a University of Rochester themed mural, which includes an image of women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, and the University’s official flower, the dandelion.

Rutherford is currently involved in several community arts organizations, including WALL\THERAPY, Sweet Meat Co., and is a co-founder of THE YARDS Collaborative Art Space.

In 2014, Thievin’ Stephen created a piece in SAGE Art Center as part of the university’s Day of the Arts and in 2012, Rutherford and artist Lea Rizzo painted murals in the University’s Highland Hospital as part of an art wellness project.

The creation of the mural is scheduled to take place between Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, April 9 and is sponsored by the UCIS Arts at UR Cluster and facilities.
