University mourns sudden loss of Sean Kunow

Sean Kunow, a staff member in the University’s Registrar’s Office, died suddenly on June 2. He was 45.

Department of Public Safety officers responded to a medical emergency involving Kunow on Thursday morning near Hoyt Hall. Several University staff and faculty members were at his side caring for him. Three Public Safety officers administered chest compressions and resuscitated him using an AED. He was then transported to Strong Memorial Hospital but passed away later in the day.

Kunow was a scheduling coordinator in the Registrar’s Office whose work focused on managing classroom space for academic courses in Arts, Sciences & Engineering, and he was recognized as being a major asset to the University’s enrollment management efforts. He was able to coordinate classroom scheduling for increasing course enrollments and was a go-to person with urgent requests to change rooms, increase caps on courses, and add new sections, particularly at the beginning of each semester. At the end of a semester, his work shifted to managing space for final exams, review sessions and other course-related programming as well as degree audit.

“Sean was among the most unfailingly generous colleagues with whom I have worked,” said University Registrar and Assistant Dean Nancy Specht. “He was kind, thoughtful and intelligent and always helpful in his dealings with faculty, staff and students.  He began his career in Admissions and then moved on to the Registrar’s Office at the Simon School.  He came to work in the Office of the University Registrar in May 2013.  He was valued friend and colleague to us and he will be missed by all who knew and worked with him.”

University flags will be lowered on June 14 in memory of Kunow.
