Background on Program
Rochester Scholars is the University of Rochester’s pre-college, academic program that offers high school students a chance to experience college life and explore new careers.
The program is for students in grades 9 – 12 and began in 1990.
Students enroll in mini-courses, reflective of fields of study at the University of Rochester or other higher education institutions.
Students interact with peers from area schools and get a taste of the college experience in a fun-filled and challenging setting.
Books, supplies, and lunch are included in the price of tuition.

Organization of Program
Rochester Scholars classes are offered during the Monroe County School District’s winter, spring, and summer breaks.
Students in grades 9 – 12 meet for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, with morning sessions from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and afternoon sessions from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
During the summer, students can attend for one, two or three weeks. The winter and spring sessions are one week long.
Rochester Scholars can choose up to two courses per session. Tuition is charged based on the session length and number of classes.

Student Selection Process
- To apply, students will need to complete the following required items:
- An application form
- Ranking of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice classes
- A letter of recommendation (preferably from a teacher or school counselor)
- Payment of tuition
- A medical liability and publicity waiver form
Students accepted to the Rochester Scholars program will show a record of academic success, consistent attendance, and enthusiasm for continuing learning.

Scholarships
- Community Scholarship
- Available to anyone enrolling in Rochester Scholars courses, Community Scholarships are awarded to a limited number of students based on financial need and merit.
- Whipple Scholarship
- Available to qualified current Rush-Henrietta School District high school juniors and seniors (for the winter and spring sessions) OR qualified rising Rush-Henrietta School District high school juniors and seniors (for the summer sessions), the Whipple Scholarship provides support for up to two Rochester Scholars courses during one session. Students must meet eligibility requirements. Whipple Scholarship tuition waiver forms are available through the counselor's office at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School and online. Learn more »»
- Youth Achievement Award
- Available to students in Rochester City School District, the Youth Achievement Award supports tuition for one Rochester Scholars class. Students must meet eligibility requirements.
- Applications must be filled out and handed in with the Rochester Scholars application before the application deadline.
- Rochester Scholars Essay Contest
- Available to all students in grades 9-12 enrolling in Rochester Scholars. Winners will be selected based on their essay response.
