University of Rochester/Zogby International
Global Religion Survey

FACT SHEET

  • Purpose:
    • To determine the importance of religious beliefs and practices in everyday life.
    • To learn how those beliefs and practices transcend geographic boundaries.
    • To understand the role religion plays in different cultures.

  • The poll, unprecedented in its reach and scope, was jointly designed by the Department of Religion and Classics at the University of Rochester, N.Y.; and Zogby International, a polling firm headquartered in Utica, N.Y.

  • This is the first time a university and polling firm have collaborated to obtain data that provide a broad, global perspective on religious beliefs and practices. Until now, there has been very little empirical data about the religious ideas, practices, ethics and priorities of the billions of adherents to the world's religions.

  • This research focuses on helping understand how diverse religions correlate with and shape their followers' basic values and perceptions. The data provide a broad global comparative base of information, as well as data specific to each religion and country.

  • 4,388 interviews were conducted from January through March of 2003 among the following groups:
    • Russian Orthodox Church in Russia
    • Christians and Buddhists in South Korea
    • Roman Catholics and Protestants in the United States
    • Hindus and Muslims in India
    • Jews and Muslims in Israel
    • Muslims in Saudi Arabia
    • Roman Catholics in Peru

  • Data are segmented by country under a number of categories, including:
    • Importance of religion
    • Attitudes about tolerance
    • Evaluating the true path to God
    • Consequences of disobedience to faith
    • Religion as a source of trouble and unrest
    • Origin of violence in one's country
    • Impact of a more religious society
    • Importance of religion among public officials
    • Source of religious education
    • Participation in religious activities

  • Extensive cross-tabulations of data have been made by country, gender and education.
