Her parents and sister were born in El Salvador. "I miss my mom's Salvadorian food," she says. "But I call twice a week, and e-mail helps me stay in touch with my family and friends."

It's not that you choose to become a composer, he says. "It's more like something you have to do. There's a musical idea that's gotten hold of you and won't let go until it's close to being right."

"A big part of college is doing things for yourself. That's your motivation," she says. "In high school, you're doing what other people tell you to do."

"I like all kinds of music, especially jazz and Big Band," he says. Hendrix and Garcia, too, it would seem from the posters on his wall.

A native of Uzbekistan, he moved to this country with his family six years ago knowing no English, and is still, he claims without a trace of an accent, "learning the language." Carlson library is his favorite study venue.

University of Chicago President Hugo Sonnenschein '61 persuaded them to enroll at Rochester (he's close friends with their dad, who's the dean of the college there). The food at Danforth also made an impact: "Anyplace that has pierogies on the menu has got to be good," says Alexandra. "We're Polish and we love them."

Possible major: A dual major in English and history
"I love to read," she says. "In high school, people would ask me, 'Why would you read a book like Jane Eyre just for fun?'"

"I wanted to go away to college, to a place that was different from the environment I grew up in," he says. "And then, hopefully, I'll go back and help change things."

His mountain bike takes up most of the free space in his dorm room--but never mind, he says. "Have you ever ridden on a mountain bike at 30 miles an hour? It's awesome!"
