D. Allan Bromley (PhD) was awarded the 2002 Nicholson Prize from the American Physical Society in recognition of his roles as a research scientist, teacher, and leader in the physics community. He is known as the father of modern heavy-ion physics.

Masatoshi Koshibi (PhD), a retired professor of the University of Tokyo, received the W. K. H. Panofsky Prize from the American Physical Society for his experimental work to detect some properties and behaviors of the subatomic particles known as neutrinos.

Leonard Kaplan W (PhD), a professor of curriculum development at Wayne State University's College of Education, was recognized by his current and former students who raised $125,000 to establish an endowed professorship in his name.

Joseph Amato (PhD), professor of rural and regional studies at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn., and principal founder of the Society for Local and Regional History, has published his latest book, Rethinking Home: A Case for Writing Local History.

Harvey Richer (PhD), professor in the University of British Columbia's physics and astronomy department, led a research team that verified the age of the universe at 13 to 14 billion years.

Paul Horn (PhD), senior vice president and director of research at IBM, received the George E. Pake Prize from the American Physical Society for his contributions to the understanding of 1/f noise and the elucidation of surface phases and phase transitions. He also spoke at the 2002 University Commencement as a recipient of the Hutchison Medal, the University's highest alumni honor.

Walter Golembeski S (MBA) was promoted to vice president of corporate planning at Genencor International. . . . Carl Sassano S (MBA), a former executive of Bausch & Lomb, was scheduled to take over as CEO of Transmation Inc. on March 31.

Robert Phillips (MS) was appointed executive vice president and chief technology officer of Windward Investment Management of Boston. . . . Talat Rahman (PhD), Kansas State University physics professor, was the guest speaker for the Vernon Larson International Luncheon Series in Manhattan. She discussed her insights about the status of women in Afghan society, gathered during a recent visit to the border town of Peshawar in Pakistan.

Don Drennon-Gala W (MS), '94W (PhD) writes that he contributed a chapter entitled "Educating All Children: Future Prospects" in the book Educating All Learners: Refocusing the Comprehensive Support Model. Don's 1995 book, Delinquency and High School Dropouts: Reconsidering Social Correlates, was among 34 books adopted and cited by the United States Senate for the National Debate for High Schools, 1996-97. A second edition of his book has been prepared, although Don notes that he is seeking a different publisher.

Timothy Mahan S (MBA) and Johanna Stevens had a July 20 wedding planned. He works for Wegmans Food Markets, and she is a teacher in the Pittsford (N.Y.) Central School District.

Scott Cummings (MS), '95 (PhD) was awarded tenure at Kenyon College of Gambier, Ohio. A specialist in inorganic chemistry, he has taught at the college since 1995. . . . Mark Zagorski S (MBA) was promoted to president of WorldNow of New York City. One of the founding members of the company, he was formerly executive vice president.
