Arie Bodek, professor and chair of physics and astronomy, has been awarded the 2004 W. K. H. Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics from the American Physical Society.

The King of Sweden presented Hans Davidsson, professor of organ at the Eastman School, with the King’s Medal, the highest recognition that a Swedish citizen can receive.

The William Blake Archive, a Web site coedited by Morris Eaves, professor of English, is the first publication to be awarded the Modern Language Association Prize for a Distinguished Scholarly Edition.

Africans and the Industrial Revolution in England: A Study in International Trade and Economic Development, by Joseph Inikori, professor of history, is earning widespread praise for its detailed study of how the Atlantic slave trade helped power England’s industrialization. The book received the 2003 Leo Gershoy Award from the American Historical Association and the 2003 African Studies Association’s Herskovits Prize.

Elissa Newport, professor and chair of brain and cognitive sciences and the George Eastman Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and was named chair of the psychology section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

John Tarduno, professor and chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, has been elected a fellow of the AAAS.

Lionel McKenzie, Wilson Professor Emeritus of Economics, received an honorary doctoral degree from Kyoto University in Japan.

Bernadette Melnyk, associate dean for research at the School of Nursing, received the 2003 Audrey Hepburn Award, the Honor Society of Nursing’s highest award.

Roman Sobolewski, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and David Williams, the Allyn Professor of Medical Optics and professor of brain and cognitive sciences received a 2003 R&D 100 Award, sponsored by R&D Magazine, which recognizes the most innovative inventions of the year.
