U.S News Ranks Simon 23rd in the Country
In its annual ranking of the nation’s top 50 business schools, U.S.
News & World Report puts the Simon School at 23, the first time since
2002 that the school has appeared in the top 25 and a jump of 13 places from
last year. The survey also ranked Simon 12th in finance and 17th in accounting
among U.S. business schools.
The Libraries Tilt at Don Quixote
Two rare first editions of Don Quixote de la Mancha from 1738 and
1755 that include biographies of Spanish author Miguel Cervantes and early translations
of the 1505 novel are among the new items that University Libraries plan to
acquire, thanks to a $27,000 gift from the Friends of the University of Rochester
Libraries. Other projects receiving funding include a collection of African
documentary films, a variety of materials on nanoscience, and other resources.
A Bowlful of Ethics
The University’s Collegiate Ethics Bowl team of Patrick Brennan ’05,
Ethan Craig ’05, Danielle Friedman ’05, Tim O’Brien ’06,
and team captain Lewis Powell ’05 took second place at the Northeast Regional
Ethics Bowl Competition last February. The event was hosted by Union College
and organized by Rochester philosophy alumnus and Union College visiting assistant
professor Michael Mathias ’98 (PhD). Team members, all of whom are philosophy
majors, were coached by Randall Curren, professor of philosophy who holds a
joint appointment in the Warner School, and philosophy doctoral student Andrew
Cullison.
‘Sophomore Saturdays’ Engage Students in the City
Sophomores have another way to explore the social and cultural life of the
city that surrounds their campus. “Sophomore Saturdays” was developed
by the Class of 2007 Council as a way to offer students programming options
while connecting them to the greater Rochester community. During the monthly
series, students visit cultural and historical sites, perform community service,
and participate in other activities.
Eastman Establishes Orchestra Musician Forum
Symphony orchestra musicians have a new resource at the Eastman School for
enhancing their professional development. Thanks to a gift of $1.2 million from
the Symphony Orchestra Institute, the school has established the Orchestra Musician
Forum. The forum hopes to launch a Web site by 2006 that will present professional
and educational information for professional musicians working in symphonies
and other musical arts organizations.
Warner School Announces Scholarships
Teachers, educational administrators, and other educational professionals in
the Rochester area are eligible for four full-tuition, competitive scholarships
as part of a new initiative by the Warner School. The program, which also includes
grants of up to $12,000 for qualifying master’s or non-degree professional
programs, is open to school personnel who wish to pursue a program in teaching,
school leadership, or counseling on a part-time basis while remaining employed
as educators.
