Class of 2011

College Sees Enrollment Increases

About 1,050 students are expected to arrive on campus for the College’s 2007–08 year, a freshman class that’s larger than anticipated, but a reflection of growing interest among students outside New York and those who are making Rochester their top choice.

For the second year in a row, Rochester admissions officials expect an increase in the percentage of admitted students who accept the offer to attend. That ratio—known as the yield—is closely watched because it offers an indication of how serious applicants are about attending a school.

“If we had had the same percentage of students accept our offer as a year ago we would have had about 1,000 incoming freshmen,” says Jonathan Burdick, dean of admissions and financial aid. “The University is gaining more national interest thanks to increased exposure, recruitment efforts, and, most importantly, word of mouth.”

Here’s a look at some projected enrollment figures for the Class of 2011:

About 40 percent of candidates were admitted, compared to about 50 percent three years ago.

About 57 percent of incoming students will be coming from out of state, a figure that has never been higher than 53 percent.

Among those expected from out of state: 42 freshmen are expected from California. Last year, 28 enrolled. And about 15 percent of students in the incoming class are from west of the Mississippi River.

The College also is expecting a 20 percent increase among students from New England. And about 72 freshmen are expected from abroad, up from 41 as of the same time in the process for the Class of 2010.

And about 25 percent of incoming freshmen—the largest number in the University’s history—applied as early decision applicants, an indication of their interest in Rochester as their first choice for college.
