The life and work of Robert Ward was celebrated last September as he received the Old North State Award on behalf of the governor of North Carolina. The ceremony marked the first of many events for the Pulitzer Prize–winning composer’s 90th birthday.

1960

Emma Lou Diemer (PhD) sends an update: Her Concerto in One Movement for Organ and Chamber Orchestra was recorded by Marilyn Mason and the Prague Radio Symphony, with Paul Freeman conducting, on the album Paul Freeman Introduces Marilyn Mason (Albany Records); her Indian Flute for Flute and Narration with flutist Nina Assimakopoulos and text by Dorothy Diemer Hendry is featured on the album Points of Entry, The Laurels Project, Vol. 1 (Capstone Records). And her Sonata No. 3 was recorded with pianist Nancy Boston on the album American Women Modern Voices in Piano Music.

1981

Luce Amen (MA) wrote this summer that performances of her new musical Native Saint: The Amazing Journey of Juan Diego had begun with dates in Mexico City, Dallas, San Antonio, San Diego, and New York City. The 18-song production features pop, rock, mariachi, contemporary flamenco, and ballads. Kay Hodges Greenwald (MM) has been elected president of the American Conference of Cantors.

1985

Dan Xia (DMA) and his wife, Ting-Yi Lin, send a photo of their twin boys, born on December 21, 2006.

1991

Kate Hartnagel Nasuti and her husband, Tony, welcomed daughter Elizabeth Grace on July 25, 2007. Elizabeth joins 3-year-old sister Emma. The family lives in West Chester, Pa. . . . John Serry (MM) (see ’75). . . . Jane Solose (DMA), associate professor of piano at the Conservatory of Music & Dance at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, writes that she has a new solo piano CD released by Eroica Classical Recordings. Variations: Three Centuries of Solo Keyboard Variations features works by Purcell, Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Herz, and Liszt.

Mark Goldman (MM) has been elected a vice president of the American Conference of Cantors.

2005

Beata Golec (MM), a pianist and composer who is pursuing a doctorate at the Eastman School, celebrated the release of her new CD with a recital at Kilbourn Hall. Beata E. Golec: Pianist and Composer features three of Beata’s compositions as well as her performances of work by Judith Lang Zaimont, Arvo Pärt, and Mozart.

2006

Samantha Angelo, clarinetist and U.S. Marines staff sergeant, has joined the U.S. Marine Band. . . . Tiffany Blake-Oliver (DMA) and Murray Oliver ’04 (MM), send a photo to announce the birth of their daughter, Grace Madeleine Jean, born on June 13, 2007. The family lives in Columbia, Mo., where Tiffany and Murray are on faculty at the University of Missouri.
