President Selects Two Alumni for Posts

President Bush has tapped into the expertise of two Rochester alumni for recent federal appointments. Warren Zapol ’66M (MD), the Reginald Jenney Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and anesthetist-in-chief emeritus at Massachusetts General Hospital, has been named to the United States Arctic Research Commission. . . . And Bush announced that he will nominate Anthony Ryan ’85, who is currently assistant secretary of the treasury for financial markets, to be undersecretary of the treasury for domestic finance. Ryan will serve as acting undersecretary until his appointment is approved.

Engineering Graduate Recognized by French University

Maciej Ciesielski ’84 (PhD), a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, was awarded an honorary degree from the Universite de Bretagne Sud in Lorient, France, this spring.

Renée Fleming ’83E (Mas) Wins Polar Music Prize

Renée Fleming ’83E (Mas) has received Sweden’s most significant award for music, the Polar Music Prize. Previous recipients include Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, and Isaac Stern, among others. Fleming was praised for her “sublime unparalleled voice” and her “magnetic stage presence.” The judges also honored Pink Floyd.
