As the individual responsible for all activities related to the academic enterprise of the University, the provost oversees and monitors all academic programs, teaching and research alike. This overall review and supervision is carried out through interaction with (and periodic review of) the deans of each school, working with faculty directly through various committees and groups, and representing the University to the outside world in matters relating to the academic enterprise.
The provost directly supervises, in addition to the deans of the schools, the Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity, the Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship, the Vice Provost and University Dean of Graduate Studies, the Director of the River Campus Libraries, the Vice Provost for Information Technology, the University's Technology Transfer Office, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, and some other university-wide activities such as the Intercessor's program, the Anthony Center for Women's Leadership, the University of Rochester Press, and university-wide services such as the University Health Service and the Office for Human Subjects Protection.
As part of the overall process of quality review, the provost has the final approval for recommendations brought from the schools for appointments to unlimited tenure on the faculty of the University, and also (through the University Dean of Graduate Studies) the final approval of doctoral degrees granted by the University.
The overall goals of the provost reflect closely the University's motto—Meliora—the Latin exhortation to become Better. Through work with the deans, faculty, and other leaders of the university, the provost helps to fulfill this motto's important ambition.
