In February 2008, the faculty of an ad hoc
Multidisciplinary Advisory Council issued their report: “New
Interdisciplinary Work at the University of Rochester.” Its core recommendation was that the University award $250,000 per year to fund multidisciplinary scholarship. Funding would be provided centrally and not come from the resources of any school. Subsequently, a large, inclusive design group of respected faculty from across the University also helped to determine that:
1. The fund supports only research, defined broadly as all scholarly and creative work;
2. Research projects must cross two or more disciplines, within one school or from two or more;
3. Funding should favor new research of recently formed teams, with a high probability of being leveraged by future external funding and disseminated.
A Multidisciplinary Fund Review Committee of faculty from across UR was established to provide peer review of grant applications. It has rotating membership. The RFP below describes the application process.

To connect UR faculty, a virtual digital space was established to post and discuss multidisciplinary research ideas. This UR discussion forum is in a secure space on our Blackboard system. Faculty can access this “organization” different ways depending upon their affiliation: AS&E, Eastman, Warner, and Simon faculty through http://my.rochester.edu; SMD faculty http://bb.urmc.rochester.edu; and SON faculty at http://sonbb.urmc.rochester.edu.
