Writing shared journals (D1.2)
Logistics and scheduling information (by Raffaella Borasi)
Journal writing frequency and expectations:
- During the Summer Institute, participants were expected to write a
journal entry every day outside of the Summer Institute sessions.
Written assignment sheets (including prompts for the journal entry) were
distributed daily, after the sessions were over. In consideration of the
many demands of facilitating a daily Summer Institute, the five facilitators
of this Institute tried to take turns in writing journal entries, so that
there would be at least one entry by a facilitator every day. We asked
instead the experienced teachers that were attending the Summer Institute
for a second time in the role of assistants to contribute journal entries
on a regular basis.
- During their field experiences, participants were encouraged (but not
required) to keep a personal field journal (but very few did!)
- Both participants and facilitators were expected to bring in an "open"
journal entry at each "project-wide" group meeting (that is,
about 3-4 times over the year).
- Participants and facilitators were expected to read the entire set
of journals before the next meeting.
Logistics of making the shared journals available to the participants:
- At each meeting (i.e., each day of the Summer Institute, and at each
of the follow-up meetings), journal entries were collected as the participants
walked in and copies of the complete set made during the meeting, so that
they could be handed out to each participant at the end of the day/meeting.
