Participants' feedback -- Responses to an anonymous questionnaire

General prompt: This course evaluation questionnaire is intended mostly for myself, the instructor, to provide information that could help me refine and improve my planning of this course in my future teaching. In what follows, I have identified key components of the course about which I would appreciate your feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Specific item addressed: Inquiry approach and NCTM Standards (i.e., analysis of classroom stories, discussions of key assumptions and implications of inquiry approach -- lesson 8-9 + midterm) -- what did you like/dislike and why? any suggestions for improvement?

Note: Since the item listed above includes a number of activities besides the midterm paper on "Analyzing classroom vignettes from an inquiry perspective", in what follows we have reproduced only the comments specific to this activity from the questionnaires collected in Implementation A and C of the Methods course.

• The midterm was helpful to focus on why an inquiry approach is educationally important in addition to being appealing.
• This was very useful: by doing the midterm I got to see exactly where the Standards really do fit into the classroom, which is very important.
• The analysis was good. It gave us opportunities to reflect on the NCTM [Standards] and its application to classroom teaching.
• This activity (the midterm) was good because it showed more practical and concrete examplesof how the standards can be put into practice.
• From readings I never truly grasped what to look for, but through watching how students/teachers interacted and based this NCTM Standards or grading scheme, really opened my eyes and focused me in my views and desires.
• Important for us to analyze situations so that we can begin to construct our own experience with goals in mind.
• The analysis of classroom stories was valuable to me (dialogue of student/teacher) because I was able to understand how important it is to use the inquiry approach to teaching.
