Choice of scope and format for this activity:

After trying with mixed success various activities to address issues about assessment in Implementations A-C of the In-service program, for Implementation D we planned a combinations of the following experiences:

• an "experience as learners" where the participants "took" an item from the new New York State 8th grade math test, shared their responses and discussed how these responses could be scored (see Facilitator's plan for more information);
• assigning a follow-up reading assignment on assessment issues -- including the Clarke, Clarke & Lovitt [1990] article on "Changes in mathematics teaching: Call for assessment alternatives".

Scheduling of this activity within the program:

The "experience as learner" took place on Day 4 of the Summer Institute -- after the participants had concluded both their "experiences as learners" and before engaging in reflections about teaching strategies and an inquiry approach. The decision to place this activity in Day 4 instead of Day 5 was due merely to logistics.

Since participants were already asked to do a considerable reading assignment in preparation for the discussions that would take place on Day 5 of the summer institute, we decided not to assign the follow-up reading assignment for the next day, but rather to include it with the follow-up readings recommended for after the conclusion of the summer institute.

Materials/equipment needed to implement this activity:

• enough copies of the test item for each participant -- see Instructional materials
• a display copy of the New York State booklet reporting rubrics for scoring the pilot tests
• newsprint, markers and tape -- to record the results of the large group discussion
• copies of the readings will be made available to the participants
