Reflecting and sharing on the on-going field experiences (D6.6)

(by Raffaella Borasi)

Sharing what was happening during the student teaching experiences, and reflecting on these experiences, was an important component of the pre-service teachers' field experiences. This sharing and reflecting took on mainly two complementary forms.

First, student teachers were encouraged to keep a field journal were they could record the most salient events of their classroom experience, reflect on their implications and begin to articulate the pedagogical insights they were gaining as a result. Students could also choose to share this journal with their university supervisor, if they wished to use it as a vehicle to communicate more regularly on their field experiences, as a complement to the few classroom visits scheduled over the semester. Each student was also required to write a weekly journal entry to be shared with the rest of the class. To illustrate the nature of these written reflections in novice teachers, we have included some sample journals in the Participants' work for this section, even if they do not address the teaching of an illustrative unit.

Further sharing and reflections were expected to take place on a regular basis in the weekly forum that accompanied each student teaching experience. Especially during the full-time student teaching experience, this weekly meeting time was essentially left open for student teachers to report on specific experiences, address questions and concerns raised by their student teaching experience, and/or ask for feedback on specific lesson plans.
