Supporting the planning of the first illustrative unit (D6.4)
Example of a series of preliminary plans prepared by a participant

Planning an inquiry unit usually requires a considerable investment of time and multiple revisions and refinements of one's original preliminary plan. This is the case even when planning one of our illustrative units. Though teachers are expected to make use of the supporting materials available, they must still make a number of important instructional decisions and plan their daily lessons. We have included here three successive versions of the preliminary plans for the Tessellation unit developed by two participants who would co-teaching the unit as their first unit of the school year. While the overall vision of the entire unit is provided in the first plan, each successive version shows increasing attention to the details regarding the mathematics to be taught, the teaching practices to be employed, the methods of assessment and the actual timing of the activities. This set of plans offers a good example of what can be expected as participants develop their plans for their first implementation of an illustrative unit.
