Supporting the planning of the first illustrative unit (D6.4)
Participants' feedback - Responses to an anonymous questionnaire

General prompt: In order to help us evaluate and improve the organization of the Summer Institute in the future, we would appreciate your written feedback on each of its major components (as listed below). Note that the sub-items listed under some of these components are intended to help you remember some key elements of these experiences - don't feel you have to address each sub-item separately !

10. Specific item addressed: Preparation to planning (Year ½ teachers sharing their experiences - Friday; small group brainstorming/discussion on the chosen unit - follow-up day; open questions - Friday and follow-up day)

Note: In what follows we have combined the responses of participants in Implementation B and C of the program, since they both experienced this activity in the same way it has been described in this section of the materials. Also, we have only reported the comments relevant to the "Supporting the planning of the first illustrative unit" from the participants' responses to this item.

-- Good. Again, Denise made so many excellent clarifying points. Connecting for fall was a good link.

-- This was extremely beneficial. Glad you gave us phone numbers, too because they will be great resources during the year.

-- OK. Not as exciting as I had hoped, but I think more planning time was needed. Maybe require 1st 2 days on paper before follow-up day.

-- This was helpful. Especially reassuring to realize that each time they use these units modifications are needed and welcome.

-- Needed more! It was beneficial discussing with others what ideas they had.

-- Good to have a day to get started built in.

-- Nice reality check. We're teachers, we don't have to do everything perfectly. It gave that "I won't be the only one" feeling.

-- I appreciate the opportunity to question the second year teachers

-- This seemed chaotic and fruitless.

-- Good to have experienced teachers there to share.

-- Sharing with phase 1 & 2 was the key experience of the entire institute. I would like to see more of it at the follow-ups!

-- The small group planning on the chosen unit was very interesting. I wrote lots of ideas down. However, I would have liked to be able to ask "someone" about some specific planning for my unit

-- I was in a group by myself (based on my unit and grade level) so I could have stayed home to work. I also had most of the unit finished before Friday. ( I thought we were asked to be almost finished.)

-- Very interesting to hear how previous years teachers implemented and changed the lessons.

-- Sharing by teachers who have had experience teaching the units was very interesting and beneficial.

-- The day you made us actually start our units proved that WE could make this happen. This was the hardest part and I thought that I would never get started and when we did, the ideas fell into place. Great! Hard Work!!

-- I did get some good ideas from their discussion - but in general their information bank is of most use while trying to generate your own ideas - not employ theirs.
