Supporting the planning of the first illustrative unit (D6.4)
Text of the assignment for preparing a preliminary plan for one of the illustrative units

Note: This assignment was given to participants on the fifth day of the summer institute to be prepared for the "follow-up day" meeting one week later.

Friday's Assignment

On Thursday, part of the day will be devoted to small groups by units brainstorming about the implementation of a specific unit. To prepare:

• choose which of the three units you want to implement as your first unit of the school year,
• reread the goals identified in the first pages of the appropriate Goals, Overview, and Ideas for Planning the Unit booklet (the 'thin' one), and highlight the ones you would like to focus on (feel free to add more of your own),
• begin planning your unit and be ready to share a tentative overview (it may be helpful to bring a few copies for others in your small group to look at) which includes such things as your goals, an overall time frame, key components and their sequence,
• read as much as you can of the relevant material on your chosen unit as a support for your planning of the unit.
