Learning about resources to support instructional innovation (D7.3)
Notes in preparation for the introduction of innovative middle school
curricula (by Raffaella Borasi)
INTRODUCTION TO THE NSF-FUNDED COMPREHENSIVE MIDDLE
SCHOOL MATH CURRICULA
Preface:
- how these curriculum projects came about (i.e., brief history about
NSF call for proposal for the creation of curricula informed by the NCTM
Standards)
- how we are considering them (i.e., possible resources so that we do
not reconstruct everything from scratch AND to validate what WE have done/can
do)
Introduction to the curricula:
- common characteristics:
- based on NCTM Standards
- organized around big ideas of mathematics
- teaching for understanding
- emphasizing connections and applications/making math meaningful
- involving mathematical investigations
- using multiple representations
- use of technology (to various extent)
- quick look at different units produced -- show slides/handouts prepared
by the curriculum themselves to advertise their products for each of the
following projects developed for middle school (since these are the ones
the in-service program will focus on):
- Connected Mathematics Project (CMP)
- Mathematics in Context (MiC)
- Seeing and Thinking Mathematically
- Mathematics through Applications Project for Middle Schools (MAPS)
