Pre-service Implementation A -- Description

Pre-service Implementation A

This was our first implementation of a math methods course based on the proposed framework and, like all the other implementations of this course featured in these materials, it took place within the teacher preparation program offered at a research university.

Participants:

Unlike the implementations that followed, Implementation A of the methods course was almost entirely comprised of elementary pre-service teachers. There were 12 students enrolled in this course -- 11 elementary pre-service teachers and a secondary math pre-service teacher who had already completed her teacher preparation program at another institution.

Variations in the Methods course:

The overall structure of the course was essentially the same as the one described in Section B.2 -- except that no separate sessions were held for secondary math pre-service teachers. In Implementation A, however, the participants engaged in an inquiry on Tessellation instead of Area. There were also a greater number of written reflective assignments, and participants completed a case study of a math student.

Variations in other components of the secondary math teacher preparation program:

Not applicable in this case.

Field experiences expectations:

Although the elementary pre-service teachers engaged in a part-time student teaching experience concurrently with the course, no arrangements were made to coordinate the two experiences.

Support provided during the field experiences:

Not applicable in this case.
