Susan B. Anthony & the Struggle for Equal Rights
A Women's History Conference
March 30 – April 1, 2006
At the University of Rochester

This conference was the first ever to focus in depth on Susan B. Anthony's life and times. Part of a year-long commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Anthony's death, the conference addressed themes central to 19th century women's fight for equality. Historians from more than thirty colleges and universities explored American Diversity, Reform Movements and Politics and Citizenship. Panelists discussed the influence of Anthony contemporaries, including Jane Addams, Matilda Joslyn Gage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Harriet Jacobs, and Belva Lockwood.

The conference opened on Thursday evening, March 30th at 7 pm, with the History Department's annual Verne Moore Lecture, a keynote address by Ann Gordon, editor of the Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. The address, "Knowing Susan B. Anthony: The Stories We Tell of a Life," took place at the University's Rush Rhees Library.
