The Hopeman Memorial Carillon

A musical instrument consisting of 50 cast bronze bells located in the tower of Rush Rhees Library, the Hopeman Memorial Carillon is played regularly throughout the year and to mark major University events.

For more about the Hopeman Memorial Carillon, visit the Department of Music's Web site.

In honor of the Sesquicentennial, Daniel Harrison, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music on the River Campus, has composed a Sesquicentennial clock chime that will be played by the Hopeman Memorial Carillon in the tower of Rush Rhees Library, beginning January 31, 2000.

Called the "Rochester Quarters," the chime marks the passing of quarter hours with a cumulative melody. At each hour, the chime rings 16 notes plus the hourly strike.

Press the play button to hear the "Rochester Quarters."

(MIDI format; no plug-in required)

To hear an actual recording of the chimes as they strike noon, click on the photo of the carillon.
(The recording is a 141K Real Audio file, and requires a plug-in.)
