The faculty voted on May 15, 1851, to make the word "Meliora" the motto
of the University of Rochester, recommending that the word appear on the official
seal of the University. Interpreted to mean "better things" or "always
better," the suggestion is credited to Asahel Kendrick, professor of Greek. The idea for the motto is believed to come from Ovid's
Metamorphoses, book 7, lines 20-21: video meliora proboque,
which means, "I see and appreciate better things."
