Begun in the the late 1800s as "Cane Rush," the "Flag Rush" was one of the
most highly anticipated annual traditions on campus. During Flag Rush, the
sophomore class set a flag atop a greased pole and then guarded the flag
against the freshman class. If the freshmen succeeded in capturing the flag,
they won the right to appear on campus without their beanies
(some histories say they won the right to appear on the Eastman Quadrangle at
all). Interest in Flag Rush waned in the 1960s and concern about injuries
brought a stop to it completely.
