Ways to protect yourself

Ways to protect yourself

  • Be careful about when/where you decide to drink heavily - it’s been estimated that over 75% of acquaintance rapes involve alcohol or drugs.

  • Use a buddy system – and support each other.

  • Watch your drinks at all times. If you notice a friend acting differently (e.g., sexually aggressive, oblivious to pain), get her out of the situation – these are symptoms of date rape drugs. More information on date rape drugs.

  • Be sure people know where you are.

  • Trust your gut. If you feel uncomfortable, do what you can to leave. Being polite/nice is overrated.

  • Communicate openly and directly with your partner about sex. You have a right to say “No” when you don’t want to do something. If this is difficult for you, talk with someone you trust about how to practice doing so.

  • Be wary of ‘rescuers.’ Don’t accept rides home from strangers, even if they seem to be concerned about your safety.
