Emergency Contraception

The non-prescription form of emergency contraception (also known as Plan B or the morning-after pill) is now available for purchase over-the-counter by individuals who are 18 years of age or older. UR Students who are 18 or older do not need to schedule an appointment with a health care provider to obtain emergency contraception. It can be obtained at any commercial pharmacy and can usually be found by speaking to the pharmacist.

Plan B, also known as emergency contraception or the "morning after pill," contains an ingredient used in prescription birth control pills. However, in the case of Plan B, each pill contains a higher dose and the product has a different dosing regimen. Like other birth control pills, Plan B is currently available to all women as a prescription drug. For additional information about emergency contraception or Plan B, check http://www.fda.gov.

Emergency contraception will continue to be available at University Health Service by prescription for patients under age 18 and for patients over age 18 that prefer to purchase emergency contraception by prescription. To schedule an appointment at UHS, call 275-2662. Payment can be made by check, credit card, or the fee can be charged to a student’s tuition bill. Cash is accepted at the UHS office in the Medical Center. The cost for the non-prescription emergency contraception, Plan B, is $21.50 at UHS. The cost for emergency contraception by prescription at UHS will continue to be $12.00. (Note: It is common for the price of the non-prescription medicine to be higher than the price for the prescription equivalent. UHS is selling non-prescription Plan B for the lowest price it can. Plan B is more expensive at many of the area pharmacies.)
