Women’s Soccer Team, SMD Students Host Soccer Camp

Members of the University of Rochester’s Varsity Women’s Soccer team spent the morning of Saturday, Sept. 29, sharing their knowledge of the sport with more than 90 young girls from around Rochester during the Girls Rule Soccer Clinic.  Designed to empower young girls and get them excited about playing soccer, the free event brought girls of varying levels of soccer experience to Fauver Stadium for a morning of shooting, passing, and juggling.

After they practiced a variety of drills, members of the women’s team coached participants as they put their new found skills to the test during mini scrimmages. Campus tours were offered after the clinic and participants were encouraged to return to campus in the afternoon to cheer on the varsity squad as they played Brandeis University in their first University Athletic Association game of the season.

The clinic was created by members of Grassroot Rochester, a student-driven initiative at the University’s School of Medicine and Dentistry that is committed to empowering and educating young people through participation in organized sports. Last spring, Grassroot Rochester member and third-year medical student Michael Barnes connected with student-athletes on the varsity soccer team, and Deon Rodgers, president of River Flow Soccer Club, to plan the first clinic. It drew nearly 35 girls from school districts across the area, including the Rochester City School District and Brighton Central School District. Barnes says the group intends to make the soccer clinics a sustainable effort that can be offered throughout the year, creating more opportunities for girls to play soccer.

Additional sponsors include the Department of Community & Preventative Medicine at URMC, which encourages medical school students to engage in community service activities, the undergraduate Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, MVP Healthcare, and the Athletics Department. Flower City Victory for Men’s and Women’s Soccer

Rochester Athletics – Over the weekend, both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams won the annual Flower City Soccer Tournament. Each team competed against four other division teams. The men were up against SUNY Fredonia, Calvin College, and St. John Fisher.  The women’s competition included Medaille College, Skidmore, and SUNY Geneseo.

The University of Rochester Men’s Soccer team beat SUNY Fredonia in the final game, 2-1.  After a scoreless first half, Fredonia got off to a quick start in the second half with several offensive attacks ending with good scoring chances.  However, UR goalkeeper Mike Moranz (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) kept the ball at bay. Nevertheless, eight minutes into the second half, the Blue Devils got one past Moranz. The goal put some fire underneath the UR players and they immediately started pressuring the Fredonia defense. In the 56th minute, Rochester freshman Jarvis D’Souza (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) set up classmate Alex Wanger (Penfield, NY/Penfield) on an outstanding pass. The combination ended in a goal by Jakob Seidlitz (Vienna, VA/Georgetown Day) to tie the score. The Yellowjackets didn’t waste any time adding another to the score sheet; freshman D’Souza scored his first goal of the year giving his team a 2-1 lead to win.

Meanwhile, the UR women’s team scored one goal early in each half to clinch the 2-0 victory over Skidmore College.

In the first half, junior Rachel Wesley (Millwood, NY/Horace Greely) and seniors Ellen Coleman (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) and Beth Martens (Hughesville, PA/Blair Academy) played a great offense to put Rochester up 1-0 six minutes into the game. The Thoroughbred defense kept the score at 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half.  But five minutes after half-time Wesley fired from 25 yards out into the back of the net, giving Rochester a 2-0 lead. Skidmore continued pressuring the Yellowjackets throughout the remaining time, but the Lady YellowJackets retained a tight defense to maintain their lead and secure the victory.
