Primary Care Appointments at UHS

The University Health Service (UHS) is currently experiencing an unexpected  primary care provider staffing shortage and is implementing short- and long-term solutions, including bringing on a temporary primary care provider who will see patients four days a week to help meet the immediate needs of students.

Our current provider staff members have been adding extra clinical time to help meet the demand for appointments. Our long-term solution is to hire a primary care provider to replace the physician who retired in August. We are currently interviewing candidates with the anticipation of filling our open position in early 2020. In addition, our nurse practitioner who is on maternity leave this semester will be returning in January 2020.

Students who need care are encouraged to contact UHS by calling 585-275-2662. Students can also call our Health Information Line at 585-275-1160 to speak with a registered nurse for guidance and self-care options. The appointment line (585-275-2662) is answered at all times. When UHS is closed, a UHS physician is on call for urgent care issues that cannot wait until the office re-opens.

Another option for students who want to be seen sooner than our schedule allows is going to an urgent care center. Click on UR Medicine Urgent Care to see the list of urgent care sites in the Rochester area. The two sites that are closest to the university are the ones in Henrietta and Pittsford. Coverage of visits to urgent care centers will depend on your health insurance plan benefits. You can contact one of our UHS Insurance Advisors for their assistance if you have questions about receiving care at an urgent care center. They can be reached at insurance@uhs.rochester.edu or 585-275-2637.
